The story of the 7th Armoured Division is a long one, for it covers the whole period of the war. Following, a hard, but successfully North African campaign, and the invasion of Italy, the Division was withdrawn to England in January 1944 to prepare for the invasion of Europe and was stationed in Thetford Forest and the surrounding area. On the 8 May 1944 the armoured regiments moved to Orwell Park School, Ipswich, where in the extensive school grounds the men camped in tents, and the waterproofing of the vehicles completed before sailing from Felixstowe to Normandy landing on Gold Beach on the 6 June 1944. (The date of the landing is confirmed in the war diaries of the 4th County of London Yeomanry). The five months spent in the East Anglia area was the only time the Desert Rats were in the United Kingdom in the entire existence of the Division.
On 3rd Jan 1996 Her Majesty the Queen was contacted seeking her approval and support in setting up the memorial, and in a reply dated 8 February 1996, as Colonel in Chief of the Royal Tank Regiment, she graciously agreed to approve and support the project. Following a meeting on the 17 July 1996 the Forestry Commission kindly agreed to permit the construction of the Memorial in Thetford Forest, constructing a car park adjacent to the Memorial and a footpath connecting the camp sites used by the three Armoured Regiments to enable visitors to walk from the Memorial to the camp sites using directions shown on an area plan beside the Memorial following Desert Rat signs.
A successful funding campaign, aided by The British Legion, The Post Office, The Dulverton Trust, The Eastern Daily Press, and many generous donations from the general public enabled construction of the memorial to commence in July 1998. The Memorial is a Cromwell Mark IV Tank set on a brick faced concrete plinth surrounded by a brick patio. The plinth and patio were constructed by the 39 Royal Engineer Regiment with the kind permission of the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel A D Macklin, RE. The association formed to look after the Memorial has no regular income and relies on donations which this open day is the biggest part, so come meet the public and veterans and lets help make this little event a success.
We can arrive and set up cam on the Saturday which is great as you get the chance to exploor the site and get your setting up done in a relaxed manner, then the Sunday is the big day with lots of visitors and a very special memorial service which we are invited to take part in.

Last year’s War and Peace show held at the Hop Farm Country Park in Beltring, Kent was billed as the world’s largest military vehicles and collectors fair. It featured some 3,500 vehicles along with 1,000 stalls, many hundreds of living history re-enactors, a massive events arena with spectacular battle re enactments and many more attractions for young and old. Once again last year the EMLRA attended the show and I can truly say that the sights there had to be seen to be believed. With military vehicles stretching across three large fields as far as the eye could see, there was something of interest for everyone, and far more than a report such as this can ever do justice. So for 2009 come and see for yourself.

Location: Peterbourgh Show Ground just of the A1, Well sign posted
Limited amount of Free passes on 1st come basis.
After several years of being missing from this event the EMLRA are going back, this year our display area is small and our vehicle ticket allocation is also small so book in soon. The show site is a purpose built showground, with toilets, showers, quality exhibition areas and tarmac roadways. For many years Live Promotions have run 4x4 and Land Rover Shows, introducing vehicle auctions, restoration projects, quality arena displays, clearly defined areas of the show (i.e. industry exhibitors, general trade, autojumble, clubs), and much more. The events are professionally organised for both exhibitors and the public.
Peterborough has become an important date and venue in the Land Rover Owner and off-road show calendar and this exciting show provides a superb meeting place for owners, magazines, clubs and the industry, and an opportunity for visitors to buy anything and everything for their vehicles.
